Frequently Asked Questions
                           Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have any formal training?
Yes, I am certified through
DONA International www.dona.org  and completed
A.L.A.C.E. doula training workshop as well.

How did you become interested in doula work?
After the birth of my first child, I took an interest in the sense of strength that stems from
making informed choices from conception and through the parenting experience.  I began
studying birth and attending friends labors.  It was after having a doula at the birth of my
second child that I began the certification process.

When will you join us in labor?
I like to know when you think labor is beginning.  We will decide when I should join you (at
home or at the hospital) based on how you are coping with labor and when you feel like you
need my support.

Do you have any preferences for labor and/or birth positions?
My only preference is that you have your baby in a way that you choose.  I am hired to
support your choices and do not have any agenda for your birth.

How will you assist us?
I will intuitively support with gentle encouragement, position changes, massage, accupressure
and counter-pressure and guided relaxlation.

Are there any limitations to the services you provide?
I operate within the parameters of the
DONA International Code of Ethics.  I will gladly
provide you with any information or resources that are available to me.  I will not recommend
any medications, herbs, diets or perform any clinical or medical tasks.

I have a partner why do I need a doula?
It has been proven that doula supported births result in shorter labors, reduced rate of
cesarean births, as well as the requests for pain medication and other interventions. Doulas
are meant to provide physical, emotional &  educational support for women and their
partners.  Giving birth is a very emotional experience, sometimes it is difficult for your partner
to see you in discomfort while not being able to "fix it".  A doula can help your partner know
how to comfort you as well as reminding them to take care of themselves (eating, stretching
etc.).  Most importantly, a doula can help to foster and maintain a strong connection
between you and your partner during labor and birth enhancing your parenting relationship.

I plan to have an epidural, how can a doula help me?
Any woman giving birth will benefit from a doula.  Though popular among women who choose
unmedicated birth, doulas are not exclusive to such parameters.  A doula will provide you with
physical, emotional & educational support as well as assisting you with position changes,
staying connected to your childbirth experience, pushing and breastfeeding.

Why waterbirth?
Waterbirth is a gentle way of welcoming your baby into the world.
Hydrotherapy provides a feeling of weightlessness and provides relief from the sensations
of labor.

How is a doula different from a nurse or midwife?
A doula is not a medical practitioner.  A doula will not assess fetal heart tones, blood
pressures and other diagnostic procedures.  A doula is solely a presence for support and
comfort, while nurses may administer medications, and perform other procedures.
